Mashable has a handy checklist entitled Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid on Your Company Blog. Good timing, because today is my day to post. Let me share them briefly below, along with some insight specific to tech B2B marketing.
1. Starting Without a Strategy. In short, why blog? What business purpose does it serve? How will you sustain it? Like many tech B2B service providers, McBru works with clients and communities that are information-driven. Our blog strategy is to publish useful marketing insights on a regular basis. If you like them, maybe you’ll like our services. We use a calendar to spread the effort among our many practitioners. I recommend that.
2. Making it All About You. Don’t trumpet your accomplishments. Share what you know and how you do the things you do. See #1.
3. Failure to Link. I sidestepped this mistake in my first sentence. While linking may boost SEO, the more important objective is credit where credit is due. In the Mashable article, Sarah Kessler credits Douglas Karr, the author of Corporate Blogging for Dummies as her source, so I just gave them both a hat tip.
4. Not being yourself. Write your posts yourself, on topics you know, in your own voice. But here’s one additional tip I want you to remember: have someone else review your post. You do not want to be known for fuzzy thinking, bad grammar and spelling errors, even if those traits are part of you. Thanks, Jeff, for reading this one.
5. Ignoring social media. Share your great post through links within LinkedIn, Facebook, or wherever your audience may appreciate them. Once I’ve hit “Publishâ, I’ll open up TweetDeck myself.
Avoid these mistakes, and your corporate blog should be engaging and authentic.
